Follow Martin through his gardening year as he looks at jobs to do around the garden. From apple tree pruning, veg growing and greenhouse care to lawns, borders and perennials he covers a seasonal job each week.
As well as the practical side of gardening we visit other gardens and chat to specialist nursery growers at flower shows across the country. We’ve also been fortunate enough to film on several occasions in New Zealand making us truly international!
The Team
Martin and Sean first worked together back in 2005 when Martin was presenting gardening features for BBC East Midlands today and Sean was director. A few years later their paths crossed again filming corporate videos and over a coffee break they hatched the idea to make some short gardening programmes and Pots & Trowels was born!

Sean Riley – our film and tech expert Sean is chief editor, sound and camera expert. Sean has years of experience with the BBC and as freelance cameraman. Sean works his magic editing our videos adding effects and music and is the brains behind our social media
Jill – Producer, camera operator and catering. Also the chief organiser of Martin!
